Play with and learn techniques of silk painting and calligraphy; create several silk projects; explore the intersections of art, faith, and community in an idyllic arts-infused retreat setting just 2 hours from Seattle! This class brings together the vibrant colors of silk painting, the beautiful flow of calligraphic marks and lettering, the expressive power of the chosen text, and the richness of the silk fabric itself. Award-winning calligrapher, Laura Norton, will guide participants in the creation of richly-colored silk scarves and fabric pieces. After a brief introduction to (or review of) Italic calligraphy, we will explore issues relating to design and layout, the choice of colors, techniques for creating beautiful, flowing calligraphic marks and easy hand-lettering on silk, resist methods, and setting the paints in the fabric.
