Calligraphy Envelope Addressing: Tips, Tricks, and Etiquette with Chantelle Hoffman
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Whether you are a hobby calligrapher wanting to take on more professional addressing jobs, a bride wanting to address envelopes for your own wedding, or a die-hard Downton Abbey fan that just really loves all things etiquette, this class will set you up for envelope addressing success!
In this intermediate level class for calligraphers, we will dive into all the wonderful intricacies of envelope addressing protocol and best practices. The curriculum assumes you have prior calligraphy experience as we will not be going over letter formation, but instead will focus on everything from address list preparation, stationery choice, addressing styles and layouts, creating envelope guidelines, time saving tools and tips for cranking through hundreds of envelopes (with minimal mistakes) and of course the “do’s and don’t of proper etiquette.” We’ll also discuss a few special case scenarios like dealing with nightmare envelope textures and mailing wax seals.
Students will receive the Bespoke Strokes Calligraphy “Envelope Guide and Addressing Etiquette 101” booklet as a wonderful quick reference guide for all those tricky etiquette questions like, “How do I list the names of a married couple with different last names?” “Which spouse do I list first on an invite if both husband and wife are in the military and the wife outranks the husband?” “Is there a particular order I should write the names for same-sex spouses?” “What about couples who aren’t married but share the same address?” And my favorite question, “Why does proper etiquette even matter?!”
Students will have the opportunity to test out various helpful tools in class and will also be supplied with various types of envelopes to use during class and have some fun samples to bring home. Students are asked to bring their own calligraphy supplies for practicing the various techniques we discuss in class.
