There are two workshops, limited to 8 people each. Each workshop is identical. (October 22-23 and October 25-26) This flyer is for October 22-23. Please only apply to only one of the two listed gilding workshops, on the website, since they are identical. Also, please note that there is a special price for the workshop, and a special location. If you have not renewed your membership for 2018-2019, please do so BEFORE applying for the workshop.

This two-day workshop on traditional gilding will be a practical class focusing on the essential skills required and the simple tools used in this often-thought difficult area of our craft. This class will begin with the making of traditional gesso (from a 14th century recipe) that is used as the base for laying of gold leaf onto paper. We shall then work on prepared areas of gesso (these are provided to student) to practice working with gold—before laying and gilding your own letters, symbols, shapes, etc. You will become familiar with the complete procedure (see below) of this ‘glamorous and gilded’ area of our craft, as well as
looking at other methods of applying gold to paper.
Peter Thornton has been a full time professional and enthusiastic calligrapher for over 45 years, working in a studio for 14 years producing Books of Remembrances, and Civic and Royal Certificates etc. before becoming self employed since 1980.
He has taught widely throughout the UK and Europe as well as Japan, Hong Kong, South Africa and travelled to the U.S., 3 and 4 times every year for 28 consecutive years.He has taught at over 26 International Conventions in the US., Canada and Europe. In 2006 he moved permanently to Tennessee, where he and his wife Sherri now live and still teach.
