“To what cannot you compel the hearts of men, O cursed lust for gold.” —Virgil

This two-day workshop on traditional gilding will be a practical class focusing on the essential skills required and the simple tools used in this often-thought difficult area of our craft. This class will begin with the making of traditional gesso (from a 14th century recipe) that is used as the base for laying of gold leaf onto paper. We shall then work on prepared areas of gesso (these are provided to student) to practice working with gold—before laying and gilding your own letters, symbols, shapes, etc. You will become familiar with the complete procedure (see below) of this ‘glamorous and gilded’ area of our craft, as well as
looking at other methods of applying gold to paper.

Peter Thornton has been a full time professional and enthusiastic calligrapher for over 45 years, working in a studio for 14 years producing Books of Remembrances, and Civic and Royal Certificates etc. before becoming self employed since 1980.
