Silky Attention: Calligraphy on Silk with Laura Norton

Instructor: Laura Norton
Location: Grunewald Guild, Leavenworth, WA,
www.grunewaldguild.com
Dates: June 23-29, 2019; All levels welcome. Ages 14+

Description: This class brings together the vibrant colors of silk painting, the beautiful flow of calligraphic marks and lettering, the expressive power of the chosen text, and the richness of the silk fabric itself.

Great art, we might say, is thought that has been concentrated…honed and shaped by a silky attention brought to bear on the recalcitrant matter of earth and of life. —Jane Hirshfield

Together we will read and meditate upon the words of such writers as Maya Angelou, Brene Brown, Mary Oliver, Jane Hirshfield, Elizabeth Alexander, Elizabeth Austen—words that awaken our spirit of creativity and possibility, and words which lament injustice and pain in this broken world. We will then contemplate how we might respond powerfully with hope and beauty, truth, dignity, and love.

Students will practice calligraphic styles-from highly disciplined to playfully freeform, using a variety of tools and media-first working on paper and then moving to silk. We will then add luscious color and calligraphy to flowing silk scarves which can be worn (or wrapped around a loved one)—the words literally wrapping the wearer in their power and presence—or use the word-adorned silk to create banners to carry or display. Making physical the written words brings a powerful presence which adds strength, beauty, and grace to a world very much in need of all these.
