Workshop with Marilyn Reaves

Topic: A Brush or Two with Collage.

This is a rescheduled workshop from February 2014. Original registered participants will have first priority followed by members of WOC.

Following a review of (or introduction to) pointed brush writing, participants in this workshop will experiment with an array of possible variations. Next, using a flat brush, we will examine the basic structure of two or three lively, bold scripts. All of our trials and writing will be based on a theme and will be done on a variety of papers, to create a “palette” of marks, letters, and text. We will add to this palette painted and decorated papers, fabrics, thread, and other materials. Using torn or cut fragments of writing along with gesso and acrylic paint, we will make layered collage compositions on wood, canvas, and watercolor paper. The original written text may be readable in part or remain hidden or suggestive. Participants will gain experience in brushwork, both pointed and flat, as well as a working familiarity with several scripts and an understanding of composition. The process of collage is fun, and often wonderfully messy.
